[Solved] Strange characters

I'm using Apache Open Office 4.1.2 and I have it installed on two laptops. When working on one machine, then closing the document and reopening it on the other machine, many of my punctuation marks get changed to Chinese characters and little black icons. This particularly happens to quote marks and dashes. I have the same version of Open Office on both machines. Both are Windows 10. One is a Dell and the other is an Elitebook, but I can't think of a reason they would be using different character encoding.

This also happened the time I edited the document from an Android tablet with the OpenOffice app.

Is there anything I can do to stop this? I need to work on the document in different locations and that is why I'm passing it back and forth between machines.

Make sure both machines have the same fonts installed.

I"m only using Times New Roman. There are no font changes in the document and Times New Roman is on both machines.

Edited to add: Maybe I should specify that I'm saving the document in .rtf format because I pass it to other people, some of whom don't have Open Office.

That's essential information. Don't save in rtf format - it's poorly supported by AOO, it's better to save in MS Word format.

It is even better to save in .odt format. You can pass on readable copies (i.e., non editable) by using /File /Export as PDF

Of course, I should have written: save in odt format as long as you are working on a document, and send a copy in doc format to people who can't handle odt.

Thanks, people. I was using .rtf for compatibility with my beta readers. But working in .odt and converting to .doc before sending it out makes a lot of sense.
